This was a visa gold card. Every one I've ever gotten has offered some
kind of "extended protection" plan. Visa doubles the manufacturer's
warranty for up to a year. So Fiberspar warranties the boom for year
one, then visa warranties it for year two. The check actually comes from
an insurance company, with the following note:

"We are pleased to present you this check for the eligible amount of your
Extended Protection claim.

Please feel free to call [snip]

Thank you for making Visa the card of your choice."
