Hi guys,

I started windsurfing back in September... y'all might remember a few
newbie questions. Took a lesson at Shoreline with my roommate Chad
and my girlfriend Darin. We loved it and we've been sailing as much
as we can since then.

Never thought I'd be windsurfing on Christmas Eve. This sport is so
addictive. We went to Shoreline and while the water was f**king cold
we still had a great time. I was planing on a 5.8 (170lbs). My first
time hooked in & in the straps & really moving. Subsequently, first
high speed catapult, what fun!

Impressions of the sailing sites, from a newbie's perspective:

Shoreline is excellent. I've often wished for longer reaches and more
consistant wind, like everyone else, but it's a great place to learn.

My first time on the Bay was at Palo Alto. It's pretty damn
intimidating. Even on a light wind day the chop is hell. I can't
waterstart consistantly and uphauling in the swell on a longboard is
tough. I've only been there twice and the second time involved a long
walk of shame, through sensitive marsh habitat no less. I'll wait
till I can consistantly waterstart before I go back.

We sailed once at Candlestick Point, and we LOVED it. Flat water and
good wind. Great place for beginners.

Pillar Point Harbor at Half Moon Bay is also a really sweet place to
sail. I guess most beginners won't be so much into the winter
windsurfing scene, but we were out there on a relatively light wind
day and had huge fun.

Lake Del Valle -- skunked. I guess I should have done a bit more
research before I drove to Livermore on a north wind day back in
October. Not only was there no wind, but no water either. Big mud
pit. The guy on the "dock" snickered and explained to me that the
lake is drained in the winter so it can be used for flood control in
the spring.

Anyway, hope to see you guys when the wind blows. If you see a
beat-up Chevy Astro van with a Silicon Graphics logo, that's us.
