Hello All:

The way I look at it, people pay 40 -50 dollars a month for television.
(40/month = $480/year!) That is one way communication like iwindsurf. Also,
people pay that much for cell phone use. Now think about the economy of
scale. Cable and TV companies have millions of subscribers yet we pay more
for them than we pay for iwindsurf service.

For the service and information we get from iwindsurf, $89/year is a great
deal. I don't see any cell phone towers out on a small pole in the middle of
the channel at 3rd Ave. in San Fran bay getting beat up by the elements.

I think iwindsurf does an excellent job . And they do provide some swell
model maps, surface temperatures, etc.

Regards, Dirk van Putten

Here is feedback directly from iwindsurf:

Alas, it is difficult to respond to all listserv type groups. We don't have
the manpower as we are a lean company. Indeed it does cost money to run any
business, ours included -- and occasionally price increases are necessary -
as with any other business. Our rate for the web has been $69/year (FX) for
years. But, we did need to raise it to $89 for 2003 to cover our costs. No
plans to raise it again, and no recent history of having raised it.

And we have offered a *substantial* increase in service for 2003: many major
prime wind sensors in the SF Bay area and beyond. No question 2003 has been
a major year where one cannot honestly say that there was not an increase in
service to go along with the increase in price. (Crissy Field Anita Rock,
Sherman Island Channel, Third Avenue Channel, and Treasure Island were all
added late in 2002 and 2003 is the first full season to see members enjoy
these top-notch sensors.) So we are covered in that way, although folks
still will complain, and that is their right, as no one enjoys price
increases. Hopefully on occasion, our members weigh in for us and set the
record straight. ;)

Some folks had the impression that we had raised our rates the year before
(2002), but this is not true. This is what you call the downside of offering
special promotions. When you offer $20 OFF for a limited time (such as we
have done via month-long email promotions from time to time), people
remember that they paid $49 but forget that the real rate was $69. So later
on they just think the price was increased when they then need to pay the
regular rate. (Sigh.) Oh well, it's not possible to inform everyone's
understanding of everything, I guess.
