I have used a little gizmo called a speedy stitcher. to do repairs
like this on sails and other things. I forget the name, but it
lookes like an icepick, only with thread in the handle and eye in
the head of the needle part. It let's you do a chain type stitch.
I;ve used it on canvas, webbing and such. I got mine at rei a few
years ago or it is here. If nothing else it is a good thing to have
for fixes in the middle of nowhere.
