Great info/comments!
My question is how many of us routinely plan to replace masts/booms every three years (except for the racers, of course)? That could add up to a lot of money, especially if you buy new stuff (as I presume a corollary piece of advice would be NOT to buy used gear with uncertain pedigree?). For example, I've only ever broken one mast, and that was purchased used (see above note). Booms are another story, of course. OTOH, broken boom is much more manageable than broken mast, IMHO.
