I've had a number of failures of this nature.

I had a uni that I had used for many years on which the cup had apparently
worn so much that it wouldn't stay in the mast base--even a new spring clip
wouldn't do it. The board skated out from under me in a jibe--I just laid
the sail in the water and SWAM. Even with a skinny mast and me spending a
minute trying to wave down my friend after I'd gotten on the board (Ha! he
sailed away), the sail was floating there, waiting. This was off the end of
Brooks Island.

Since there are many parts of these units that go bad, my new rule is to
replace the whole thing every year.

And for those of us who do not fall down when we jibe, we can look down at
the mast track periodically and see if our mast is positioned in the same
place as when we left shore. I've had mine come undone, and I blame it on
those silly tack straps we used to have. (You bet I quit using
them--sissors are my friend.) For those of us who sail around in circles
(tack on one side and jibe on the other) stay lines and uphauls get twisted
up. I did notice that when my uni comes loose, it wants to slide forward.
Therefore, I greatly prefer mast tracks with the key hole in the back.

I've had two of the two bolt jobbers (different brands) but they worried me
even more than my one-bolts. Mine had that little spring clip with that
little button which looked like a point of failure to me.

Cindoll
