Cal Sailing Club @ Berkeley operates year round, but doesn't rent gear, it's
a membership and skill-level thing. Last I saw it was $45 / 3 months + 2
hours work. You're allowed to progress thru their (good) gear as your
(proven) skill level goes up. A great deal for locals with limited funds,
unlimited time.

Next door is Cal Adventures; they'll rent you gear pretty cheap no matter
what your skill level, and rescue your lame butt for an extra $10. They
also have classes on weekends.

Berkeley is said to have the steadiest winds in the Bay; makes sense -
longest open-water fetch. And it's onshore wind, comforting for beginners.
