I went about 5 times to Maui and always found rental scene too good/easy to pass up. You can negotiate rates for multiple gear set-ups if you are staying more than a week (but arrange via email before you arrive). Gear is new and you can get the exact board you want, etc.

Shipping your gear is a bit complex, but I've done it via United to Kona, using the technique of having their written windsurf gear policy in my hand to argue rates with the check-in folks. That cost me $75 each way, for board, 5 sails, and 3 masts & booms. I'm doing it again to Kona in 3 weeks. Hope my experience is just as good this time. Hardest part is too and from the airport. Also, packing is an art if you don't want damage (another reason to rent).
