Haven't written a coast report in a while, so here goes-

Having been about three solid weeks since there was decent wind at the
coast, today went off, for me, op'd 5.2 (me=185 lbs.), coulda been on 4.7
(most were). Unfortunately, nature plays a cruel prank on us all. From
Friday through the weekend a nice south swell was working. By today, it
was virtually non-existent. It would've been completely flat 'cept for
the occasional (every 10 minutes or so) overhead high set that rolled
through. Fortunately, I got a few rides. Unfortunately, everyone was
jones'n for wind as much as I was, and the entire crowd was converging on
the same waves. I rode one overhead set (nice!) with 3 other guys on it.
 Quite the party!

Kelp Alert - due to the absence of swell/wind, the kelp beds have gotten
quite thick. Also, given the low tide I, for one (and a couple others I
observed), did a couple face plants during wave rides after getting
caught up in the kelp. Moreover, it made me generate a new waterstarting
technique. Body drag to get board going and avoid getting tangled,
transitioning to upright on the board.

Kitesurfers - On light wind days especially, kitesurfers are becoming the
rule at Waddell. The Scheibel bros, et al, take the place over. These
guys are good, they're waveriding, and they're way more considerate than
the kitesurfers at Third imho, but it's clear that just a few of these
guys (around 6-8) can max out even a quite large place like Waddell. It
is quite impressive to see 15-30' aerials up close, tho. Notwithstanding
this, I'm considering adding scissors to my rescue kit. What do you do
if you have an equipment problem on one of these things? You certainly
can't paddle one in, can you?

Anyway, the coast was good today, and tomorrow looks promising, too. Go
git sum, and pray for waves!

-Ed
