I haven't had it, and I've got bad eyes, but Consumer Reports just had a
big write up on it. I know several folks that have had the procedure,
all happy save one who was scared off by the pre-op video tape. The
biggest downside is the "star" effect with bright point sources of light,
esp. at night. This is caused by the edge between the lasered portion
and non-laser portion of your lens. This goes away in most of the
patients as the edge smooths over. The other biggest downside is that if
you don't achieve 20/20 or other uncorrected vision, then you will have
to wear glasses anyway and it won't be able to be corrected by more
LASIK. As you age, you may become more far-sighted, so if they correct
it early, it may change after the procedure.

I can be corrected if I'm wrong, but you also *have* to wear sunglasses
after the procedure (e.g. when surfsailing). If this is a problem, then
maybe LASIK isn't for you. My eye doctor told me that the wavelength of
UV, being very short, is filtered our by contacts themselves.

You just have to balance the invconvenience of contacts or glasses v. the
downsides. I know, I lose contacts at Sherman and the Gorge all the
time. For some reason, salt water is not much of a problem, but fresh
water knocks 'em out. Of course, there are upsides to seeing underwater
and waking up seeing w/o glasses.
