about the downwinder method:
yes, it can be fun. the launch is from Drake's Beach. Tomales is far
away over the ridge.
upsides: no upwind leg
smooth fast reach to surf zone
short walk from parking lot to water
restaurant (good food) at Drake's
downsides: WAY more driving.
Corte Madera to Limantour = 60 minutes
Corte Madera to Drake's = 75 minutes
Drake's to Limantour = 45 minutes
when i've done it, i used a non-sailor buddy/wife/girlfriend
as a driver - drop us at Drake's, pickup at Limantour.
Drivers tend to do this only once...8^)
Launch at Drake's is in *straight offshore* wind, so you go
dead downwind into small surf! can be a challenge.
another option is launch and return to Drake's.
short car to water distance, fresh water shower, restaurant (but usually
closed by the time i return!). upwind return leg is increasingly upwind
and gusty/holey as you approach the beach
after examining and trying all the options, i've settled on the limantour
launch as the most practical method. shortest drive, best wind at launch.
and i always pack my own beer.
the boat option is just too complicated, and bodega is too far away in
very rough conditions. now if someone wants to windsurf from bodega to
tuba, let's talk... i'm into adventure!
