Ken's right. I made some composite jpegs of the two proposed SFO
runway expansions (using the cargill-ponds.gif graphic from the online
paper) overlayed on a satellite photo of the current SFO/Coyote area.

Assuming the graphic from the paper is at least somewhat accurate, I
think the composites provide a decent picture of the sailing area that
would remain if the runways go in. Some things to note:

 o The reach to the runway appears to be less than 1.5 miles for
   both the one- and two-intersection proposals. Depending on the
   height of the runways above the water (downwind turbulence),
   the effective sailing area could be substantially less.

 o There could be some interesting reverse currents created by the
   new mini-bay the main runway would form.

I don't think the new runways would be the death of Coyote (the way
the buildings at 101 Airport Blvd might be) but the character of the
park would certainly change (from B&J to flat-water cruising.)
