Brad,
I've built a heating unit to thermoform acrylic rods before and a few small
devices for steam bending wood. I used heating coils and a fan but my advice
is, 'Keep it simple.' The board bag idea from Ken is a good way to go, but
wrap it with more insulation and stick a temperature sensor (thermometer or
pyrometer) in it to control the flo. Cut an exhaust vent flap.

Use a professional heat gun. not a hair dryer. Milwaukee makes a good one and
any industrial tool place will have them. K1199 Tools in South City probably
will have a good price.
