This past season I had the incredible pleasure of doing two down-winders from
Oyster point to Third Avenue. Both times the most consistent wind was near
the airport’s birdcage. Unfortunately the planned SFO expansion would be in
the middle of this great wind corridor!

The initial SFO runway expansion proposal had so many inaccuracies that they
are rewriting it to submit in January! Why are they in such a rush? Because
it is a bad plan!

SFO plans to justify filling two miles or 5000 prime bay water acres by
trading the hostilely acquired east bay commercial Cargill Co salt flats.
This land is already rotating wetlands!

During the Thanksgiving bad weather, one news station reported that SFO
blamed the delays on not having modern runways like the Oakland and San Jose
airports. Instead of expanding SFO, why not distribute the additional air
traffic to other Bay airports? The East Bay and San Jose sprawl needs to be
better supported! It is poor planning to land planes far away from peoples’
destinations. Expanding SFO will create much more Peninsula traffic
congestion, noise, and air/water pollution problems.

It is amazing that the San Mateo County SFO-land-bay area is completely
controlled by the San Francisco based Commissions! Remember how San
Francisco approved the Baseball Park’s construction permits without the
required bay environmental study? More recently, San Francisco’s pressure
allowed the 3Com park expansion into CA State’s Candlestick Park! These are
examples of precious community resources being squandered for the commercial
gain of a few. Don’t let SFO benefit from another huge community loss!

Please invest some of your off-season windsurfing time to improve the Bay’s
long term health. Send letters and call the following planning agencies to
express your concerns on how the planned SFO expansion will severely degrade
the Bay area’s quality of life! Collectively these agencies will decide the
fate (issue permits, and specify impact studies) of the soon to be proposed S
FO expansion into the Bay. The first two agencies have a large decision
authority.
