Subject: Jibing Close Calls

I think I've posted this comment before, but it's important to look during
the jibe, not just before, especially if you are not an expert who jibes
tightly in 3 seconds (or maybe I'm the only person still working on jibes
who unfortunately gets too focused on hands/sail/boom/feet etc.?). Peter
Hart's videos call this the "three county jibe". A lot can change/happen
in longer jibes, especially if you are on opposite tacks where closing
speeds could easily be 30-40mph, thus markedly expanding the distance "of
concern".

Sunday at Berkeley produced two close calls I'm aware of, one of which was
mine, due to me violating my own rule. I saw someone downwind and behind
me who appeared to be heading off further downwind preparatory to his own
jibe. I commenced my own and wound up almost running into him. As we
compared stories (and he gracefully accepted my apology) in the water (we
both "bailed") it turned out that he had spun out, just after I surmised
his intention, which I should have noticed a bit earlier than I did.

On another note, Berkeley seems to have the best wind in years this season,
but don't spread the word :)
