Here is my $.02.

With two people, one at each end of the mast, violently shake the mast up
and down. Try to shake it so the mast flexes. The joint should start to
separate. Once it has moved a little you can go to the twist technique.

This has worked for me several times.

Regarding WD-40 or other organics, unless they contain strong solvents they
are probably OK. However, they may not provide the lubrication you are
looking for. I suggest soapy water followed by the above procedure.
