I may get yelled at for revealing "secrets" but check out the
     following:

Word of Mouth rentaused car 808 877 2436
old hi mile car, but they work, look less touristy
(less a theft target) good prices.

Leinaala condos 800 334.3305 (this could be old)
998 s. kihei rd, kihei, maui

right in kihei...sail from the condo a lot of the time. Nice
condos, small building, racks for boards, pool, tennis close, big lawn
between condo and beach, pretty good rates (lots of little discounts,
     ask, ie AAA, AARP etc)

     other than that:
watch your gear, I've had a rental mast stolen from the grass in
kanaha, 15 feet from where I was loading gear on top of the car.

Start early, do all the family together stuff before it get's too
windy to sit on beach, or too hot. Then sail...everyone is happy.

Long's is generally the cheapest for beer, wine etc...havent tried
     costco yet.

A sunset resevation at Mama's Fishhouse will make up for lots of
sailing time, not cheap but worthit.

Azeka's ribs are still there...just at the snack stand by the Ace
hardware (that is where Azeka's market used to be)

Keili's (spelling may be wrong, look for brochures) Kayak tours, were
     a lot of fun..good snokeling.

     Paul,

I'm going to Maui next month for a few days and need some advice on
accomodations. Any inexpensive cottages near Kanaha or Kihei? Do I
need a car? Do the trades blow in mid-Nov?

I just returned (10/2 - 10/9) from MAUI..and it was great: sailed
everyday..much to the chagrin of 'my' wife.....daily conditions were 5.2, 4.6,
4.3 (Naish sail..WOW), 4.9, 4.9, 4.3. Note that on two of the days Kanaha was
dead but Kihei was very strong (don't waste time waxing off at Kanaha when this
happens)
the swell was average; 2- 8 feet and not very consistent..we get better swell
here at the coast
...but she finally understood...since the wind blows in the afternoon you
should plan morning events for the 'family'..some of which were:
o driving along Kannapali and around the top of the island (its safe and paved)
o walking/shopping/siteseeing/lunch in Lahaina
o snorkeling at many beaches
o lounging at Alex Baldwin park outside of Paia (close to Kanaha AND a good
downwind launch...she can drive the car over)

Lastly, I rented my gear from Sailboards Maui on Dairy road..they are exteremly
accomodating (no charge for a 'reefed fin) with plenty of equipment and
no-charge for no-wind days at Kanaha (ie. Kihie was free!)
