Friday 8/25: Sailed 3rd Ave from 4 to 7, 5.9 (200 lbs) rigged flat. Slightly
overpowered at times in the channel and powered enough to plane most of the
time on the inside, where the wind was flukey. Great ebb, lots of swell.
The wind totally shut off inside late. I was able to plane about half way in
from the channel, and then combination slogged, body dragged the rest of
the way. There were at least 32 people still struggling to get in at 7:20.
I got there at 3:30 and the lot was already filled back to the road.
What happened to the days when nobody went to 3rd?

Sunday 8/27: Crissy. 5.3 from 3 to 7. The wind was still up and filled
in when I left at 7:40. I would have stayed on the water longer, but my
body said no. It was my first time there, and boy was it good. I have always
been apprehensive of sailing there: too many people, strong currents, fog
(which caused me not to go out the previous two times I tried to sail there)
and, I hate to say it, sharks (attributable to my mom, who is always
telling me to watch out for them, as if looking down into the water is
going to help). Well, Sunday was perfect.

Here are some observations for anyone who has not yet sailed Crissy but is
considering it:

Big wind line at Anita Rock (the piling with that dohickey on top).

The water is cold. I'm comfortable in a shorty on warm days at 3rd in the
last 2 months, but this is definitely ocean water. My 3/2 was ok, but a
good fitting, no hole 4/3 would have been better. Bring a hood.
Helped a guy who had a broken mast about mid-channel. I was definitely cold
after being in the water for 15 minutes. The current really pulled us to the
gate in that time. Fortunately he had 20 ft of bungee cord which went from
the tower's harness to the his board's strap. The rig was folded up on the
board, and he was on top of that. This worked well (thanks to all the
previous net tips), until a wind shadow became a problem. Fortunately a
sailboat came by at that time and offered help, and I could get back to sailing.

Having a lot of sailors on the water was not really a problem. It looked
like there were one hundred people out, but once you're out there they all
seem to disappear about mid-channel, and especially on the northern side, or
if you make upwind progress. The freighters aren't as fast as we are,
but they sure can block wind. The ferries create a nice step wake to jump.
The sailboat regattas tend to cluster, so they are not a problem, but I
wouldn't want to be used as a jibe marker. At the start of a reach, I would
look out to sea and towards Alcatraz for any potential bogeys. Coming in the
easiest way to find the launch is to point at the Palace of Fine Arts
(the big dome).

The setting is fantastic. Tremedous views of the city. Sometimes I would take
a break and slog just to check it out. Next time I'm bringing a camera.
Saw four seals and lots of water fowl, which squawk and then wait until the
last minute to dive.

It's not very far across. At 3rd I end up jibing when my back foot starts to
throb, at Crissy, reaches are shorter, especially since the best wind was
in the middle section. The wind seemed much more holey than what I'm used
to, and the swell wasn't well formed and it was very choppy. On the
northern side, the waves were running parallel to the brige, which made
coming back very bumpy.

No problem parking, but the wind sure kicks up a lot of sand. In all, it
was a most excellent day! I'm definitely going back for more. My great
session indicator has been pegged: my hands are a nice pink hue. The Marina
Safeway is a great place to load up with food for the munch home.

I sacrificed my 5.9 to the wind gods. Any loft recommendations on fixing
a 1.5 ft square hole in an upper panel?
