=============== Wed 2 Aug 95 - 3rd - 5.2/257 (184 lb)

Michael and I sailed 3rd. I used 5.2/257, he had 4.8/8'6 (160#). Due
to the flood tide, the channel was pretty smooth and the inside was
bumpy. In fact, the inside had pretty good swell up to 3 feet in many
places, generally biggest right just inside the brown water, but
best-formed further in. There was also some cross-direction-chop - it
was pretty tiring sailing. It was generally a very nice session,
though.

Shades of the Gorge: a barge went by going downwind - seemed to be full
of dirt. I managed to avoid getting in front of it.

We sailed from 3:30 to 5:30, and came in as the wind seemed to back off.
The wind reports were higher than we expected from what we felt on the
water - I guess the fairly strong flood tide knocked a few knots off.
As shown in the reports, the wind was also quite northerly. From the
new launch, we got to the channel well downwind of the channel marker on
the first reach.

The new parking lot was as full as I have seen it - there were cars on
both sides of the access road and the dirt area by the turnoff from the
street was also full.

I'm heading to Oregon for 3 weeks now. I'll be in the Gorge Aug 11-20,
wind willing. I'll be staying at Tucker Park (I hope), so drop by if
you're in the area (look for the blue Previa w/ Gorge racks, license
KENKATI).

If there is a problem with the list server (e.g., no wind_afternoon
mail), you can contact Rick Walker (walker@jr.hpl.hp.com-DeleteThis). If there is
a problem with the weather data sources (e.g., the data is old), I'm
afraid I have no backup. Let's hope it all keeps working!
