I agree that a marine radio is the best way to go. This is what
they're designed for. However,
- IF you already have a portable (ie, you're already paying the monthly
charge),
- AND you can keep it dry (really really dry) even while your using it,
- AND it seems rugged enough,
- AND your annual windsurfing budget is bust
then use the portable. Its better than nothing.
If you don't already have a portable phone, don't go out and buy one
to use sailing - get a marine radio. Yeah, they're expensive, but its
a lot like deciding how much to spend on a motorcycle helmet: "What's
your head worth?"
