Regarding: RE>Sunday - Crissy Field Report!

Saturday was a good day a Crissy even though I broke my boom. I rigged my 5.2
and headed straight for the north tower fully powered. I went out the gate
and than hit a lull for a few minutes. The ebb was strong so I decided it was
too risky and sailed back into the bay when the wind came back up.

After about 1.5 hours of sailing inside the gate, I decided to start making
my way back to the launch downwind. It was somewhere near the incoming
shipping lane when my boom tube snapped at the head. All I could think about
was not becoming another Crissy rescue statistic. I was determined to get my
rig back to shore without help. Fortunately, I was carrying a tow rope. I had
no intention of getting towed in, however. So, I flipped the boom over and
tied the broken side to my mask to keep it from dangling. I was able to sail
on a plane downwind but did not hook in for fear of over stressing the boom.

Within 30 minutes of breaking my boom in the middle of the bay, I was able to
reach the launch area. I did stop to rest one time, well ok, I fell once and
decided it was a good time to rest. I felt very fortunate considering I saw 2
different windsurfers who were rescued for unknown reasons while I was
sailing. Anyway, I would not have been able to rescue myself had I not been
carrying some extra rope with me.

Gregg Holtmeier.
