Subject: EPIC day at 3rd

Remember the big day at 3rd last Monday? Forget it - yesterday was
UNREAL! I arrived at 4pm - it looked good, got out my wave board and
4.5. But before I even started rigging, it died off, so I rigged the
5.0 - went out, and kinda slogged around for 10 minutes, and almost
left. Then, all of a sudden, it came up (around 5:30), and I was
overpowered. My 5.0 AWOL takes a lot of wind - I sailed it last
Monday, and it was controllable, though I finally rigged down because I
got tired. But yesterday, it was hopeless to sail the 5.0, so I put on
the 4.0, which also handles a ton of wind, and was still moderately to
totally overpowered the rest of the day. I would have been a lot
happier on the 3.5, and I seriously considered putting on my daughter's
2.5, but didn't have time (as I had to pick up my kids at Great America
at 8pm). It would have been plenty outside (meaning 150 yards out).

The wind was nice 4.0 in the cove downwind of the launch, but as soon
as you passed the "point" at the launch - OHMYGOD! And it just kept
building. I don't know if anyone got as far as the channel - 100-150
yards out was as far as most people would go. The general consensus
seemed to be 40 knots, with gusts to 45. People who had them were on
3.5-3.8's, spilling wind like mad. I've always figured 3.5 sail = 35
knots, and it was clearly windier than that. I sailed until 7:00, and
it was still just as strong then as at 5:30.

It was certainly as windy as any day I've ever sailed on the bay in 5
years, but what made it really unusual was that it was so steady. No
explosive gusts, just steady building as you got farther from shore,
and not light inside. In this case, the wind reports underestimated
the conditions:

I know everyone always overestimates the wind strength, but I assure
you that the numbers for the airport above don't even come close.
SoSF_SBrMt's 34g43 even seems low.
