Subject: Self Rescue

There is a universal windsurfing distress signal that all should know
before sailing. It is to wave both your arms over your head with the
hands crossing. It is also an easy matter to sail over and ask "are
you ok?" before calling the CG. A downed sailor can loop his/her arm
thru the uphaul to keep the rig close while waving down another
sailor.

Then again, what is really needed is flyers and instruction on self
rescue and sailing with common sense. If you CAN'T sail in from the
channel at 3rd with half a sail or boom, without a fin, or with the
nose of your board broken off, then you have NO BUSISNESS sailing
there. Sail inside where you will be blown to the bridge and you can
walk back. Same goes for Coyote, don't sail past the point until you
are able to self rescue. Sailing at Crissy without advanced/expert
skills is my idea of "Social Darwinism".....8-)

Jeremy had a good idea, practice sailing your board backwards to see
if you can sail without a fin. Good sailors can do this. Also, if
you break down, forget about getting back to where you launched and
head off the wind to make land with minimal stress on your gear. The
walk back from the Bridge at 3rd is a good "cool down" and I've done
it many times and didn't need to ruin the afternoons sailing for my
fellow sailors.
