Jan,

        Having done it both ways several times (but Maui rent and
Kona carry - due to gear availability differences), I'd suggest
renting for Maui. Particularly if you want gear flexibility and/or
to try new stuff.

        For two weeks I'd also suggest pre-negotiating a package deal
via email. I did so with Second Wind and got two complete rigs and a
board for about what you indicate (as I recall anyway), plus easy
exchanges if wind required different board. Then I took along a
sail/mast/extension (easy to carry - call them a tarp) and had three
on-site sails essentially rigged at all times.

        Packing gear, getting to and from airports, and dealing with
airlines was always MAJOR hassle - even pre-9/11. OTOH, nothing like
having your own board for comfort.
