Water tight at 1m does not mean water proof.
I have blown out a couple 50m watches WS.
Getting rained on isn't the same as
falling off your WS during a full plane.

It's nice to have a radio even when you don't
need help. Once when it shutoff quickly a Tourist
saw me slog/swim and called in the Cavalry.
They ignored the fact I was swimming fine,
did not use any distress signals (e.g. on board
waving hands), and my friend told them I was
ok. They all sat there on shore leaning
against the hook and ladder and watched me
swim for an hour... If I had my VHF radio..
I could have called them off.
