Another lesson to be learned (remembered) is to be sure that your board does
not get away from you while to attempt any kind of repair or adjustment.

Probably a good idea to use some spare line to tie your board to your
harness so that you don't end up swimming in without your board. I'd rather
paddle a board (or just hang on if totally exhausted), rather than swim with
no added flotation.

... and if you are confident that you can make the swim, attach your strobe
to your rig and the Coasties will be able to find it as soon as it gets
dark.
I carry a strobe and a small flashlight so that I'd still have a light to
signal with even without a strobe.
