Warning! Newbie... please flame lightly!

So, I took my first kiteboarding lesson last week and then purchased a
starter setup to really get going. I'm excited to get into this sport, but
my question revolves around my total lack of understanding about wind. Here
goes:

What makes a day a good day to go out?

I live near 3rd Avenue, and have been over flying the trainer kite about 3-4
days a week for the last month. Some days there is a lot of wind, but the
place is deserted. Around noon today (Saturday) the wind was bending the
trees, but the parking lot was empty. Some days I'll go over to 3rd Avenue
and it's PACKED, and other days I'll go over and it's totally empty. What
does everyone else know that I'm missing?

I've looked at the numbers, I understand about knots and degrees, but what
am I looking for to indicate that it's a perfect time to go out? If the
wind is offshore in 3rd, do people go over to Alameda and ride there?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give, if you want to spare the rest
of the list members, you can reply to me directly at jstrausb@hotmail.com.-DeleteThis.com

Cheers,

-J

p.s. If anyone from Helm is reading this, why not put a cam on top of the
Helm building at 3rd? Link it back to your web site and use the publicity
to drive some eCommerce? Just a thought.
