Thanks for Wind and thanks for the warning.
I got a late start but sailed Alameda between 1:30 and 3:45 pm considerably
overpowered on a 4.5
Once the stinging rain front passed, the wind decreased considerably. A few
guys seemed to be enjoying what was left on 5.0s and 5.5s well into the last
few rays of light.
Regarding the temperature, it seems you sailed earlier in the day (which
also seemed warmer). All the same, even though Alameda didn't feel
particularly warm for this spoiled summer sailor(the water reminded me of
mid september at Waddell). Discomfort turns to pain only in the absence of
wind.

I showed up at Alameda at Sunrise and it was blowing 45 knots but the wind
had shifted to dead onshore. The one guy in the water had just been tossed
through his sail while trying to beat upwind against the 4' swells that were
jacking up by the beach.
I drove over to Berkeley where a guy by the docks was reporting that he was
overpowered on his 3.5... so I rigged a 3.5. Just as I got all rigged, the
wind clocked to NW and the inside went to glass, so I headed over to Rod &
Gun. I sailed about 40 minutes at Rod and Gun but the NW wind was up and
down... swim, sail, swim. Someone must have thought we were in trouble
because the local police boat came out to watch the loons. By the time we
got
bored the wind had gone back to W.
I raced over to Berkeley and found perfect 4.5 to 5.0 steady wind coming
straight out of the west with some nice big swell. It was an epic Berkeley
day with warm air and warm water. It was great until 2:00 to 3:00 when the
wind shifted to NW, cranked up to 40 knots for about 3 minutes and then
started working it's way down. After the shift I went from being slightly
upwind of the launch to being a couple hundred yards downwind of the launch.
I had to make some serious upwind runs to avoid coming in at the toilet
bowl.
All in all it was epic.
The system was very bizarre given all the shifts in direction but the key is
that it was strong given that the first few storms of 2000 were pretty
wimpy.
I heard good reports from Candlestick and a bunch of people sailed Crissy
although I hear it was gusty.
