Dear 3rd ave colleagues -- I had two experiences at 3rd that highlight my
growing concern about the interaction between kiters and windsurfers.
Yesterday, I sailed out at warp speed toward the channel and about 50 yards
or so before reaching the channel I noticed a kiter just upwind from me. He
jibed hard right directly -- and I mean directly in front of me -- close
enough that he reached out to touch or maybe avoid my sail -- a few feet from
me. Then he apologized with a nice UK accent '\223 anybody want to take credit?
About 30 min later, I was again heading at warp speed about 1/3 of the way to
the channel marker and another kiter jumps upwind and gets huge air -- maybe
20ft flying directly over me -- landed down wind and gave me the Hawaiian
hang loose sign. I considered but did not return a hand gesture of my own
since I was having too much fun to ruin my Karma.

Now this comes after Mark Bonner got jumped over near the ramp and Rich took
a direct kite hit 2 weeks ago. My view is that a windsurfer can sail within
about 20 ft and I don't care if he impales himself in his mast doing a trick
or just being a rookie -- I don't need to depend on his/her skill for
ensuring my life and limb. In the case of kiters, I have to make the
judgement that he/she is good enough that I can sail within 75-100 ft (lines
may even be longer) and avoid being closelined or kamakozeed. Now since many
of my best windsurfing friends are crossing over to partime/fulltime kiters,
I want to find a way for all of us to get along without moving toward Maui
situation in which the communities are segregated. One more serious incident
like the one to Rich or worse could cause such a scenario.

Given this situation, I think that the kiters need to recognize that each one
utilizes potentially a considerable larger amount of water area resource than
a windsurfer and that we (or at least me) are not interested in being target
practice or hurdle markers. I believe we can make this work. Since my
cross-over sailing (now kiting) buddies are all nice folks I am hoping that
the kiters can get together a bit and talk among themselves about how to
improve this situation. I would welcome any suggestions for things that
windsurfers can do as well to help.

Now while I am ranting and raving '\223 the parking situation at 3rd is getting
out of control with the lot full back to the light on a weekend. The only
way for it to be manageable is to maintain a short term rig drop off area
near the front of the lot. In recent weeks, some folks have taken to parking
there as there personal space when the lot is full. Friends, if you come late
'\223 drop off your gear up front and then park in the back like everyone else.
If not, it becomes unmanageable and we also run the risk of getting
cross-wise with the fire/police'\246.. everyone is special '\223 please be
considerate. The person you piss off is likely to be one of your friends or
one of your ex-friends'\246. Now let's shred! Mark.
