I have seen two broken masts at 3rd just this year. Both were breaks at
the boom (though nothing big was being done), and both sailors were able
to reverse the middle piece and sail in.

Yeah, I once got a tow from a Jetski at Crissy when the wind died, but
the ebb did not. Being towed with a rigged sail was very unpleasant,
but it sure beat drifting out to sea.

The two times I have been picked up (near 3rd both times) the CG boat
did pick up my equipment. But I understand they are under no obligation
to do so.

The second time, getting me in the boat with a broken ankle in 8-foot
swell was exciting, as the height of the boat's gunwale varied between 2
and 6 feet, often exposing the bottom. But the equipment was made easy
because I had already tied it to myself with my 30-foot line. That
helps a lot - they can focus on rescuing the person and then just reel
in the equipment.
