Re: Bay protection campaign

I am now on the Board of Directors of Bay Vote Yes (www.bayvoteyes.org). I am
contacting you to ask for your help with what San Francisco Magazine has
called the "most dramatic environmental showdown over the Bay in 50 years."

Bay Vote Yes has been organized to push for voter approval of a San Francisco
ballot measure that is designed to protect the San Francisco Bay. The
Amendment is supported every member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors
and by 27 community and environmental groups including Save The Bay, the
Sierra Club, and Surfrider Foundation.

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted unanimously (11-0) to place a
Charter Amendment to the on the November ballot. If approved, the Amendment
will give the SF voters the right to vote on any project that fills 100 acres
or more of the Bay. During the last 35 years, the Bay has been filled at a
rate of 15 acres per year. The San Francisco International Airport is now
working on plans to fill as much as 1,400 acres of the Bay. Those of us in
the environmental community who have carefully studied the airport's runways
plans have come to the conclusion that SFO has ignored simple delay solutions
in favor of a multi-billion dollar project that will severely impact the
health of the Bay. As it stands now, the members of the Airport Commission,
all appointed by the Mayor, will make the decision and the citizens will not
have a true voice.

How you can help:

(1) If you live in SF, make sure you get out on November 6th to vote Yes on
the Charter Amendment. I'll let you know when we have a Prop letter is (e.g.
Yes on Prop X) once we know more.

(2) Whether you live in SF or not, get your friends and family in SF to go
out on November 6th and vote Yes for the charter amendment.

(3) Make a contribution to Bay Voye Yes! so that we can run an effective
campaign - http://www.bayvoteyes.org/contribute.htm

(4) Get involved. Help us plan events, throw a house party, or staff a table
at a street fair to get the word out - http://www.bayvoteyes.org/events.htm

(5) Join the Bay Vote Yes! Steering Committee.
When: 7:00 pm. Tuesday, August 7, 2001
Where: Sierra Club Headquarters, 85 2nd Street @ Mission, 3rd floor
conference
             room, San Francisco

Thanks for your help,

Peter Thorner
