Subject: Re: polypropylene board repair

Manuel,

I sail a Tiga 254 and lost it once at Waddell. Someone ran into it in the
waves and left a funnel shaped hole 6" diameter through the deck right to
the bottom of the board, by the mast box. I got the same advice as you to
use a heat gun, but I also was missing a large piece of plastic and foam. The
problem with the heat is that you can melt too much plastic, and there is
no way back. So I just refilled the hole with expanding foam, bought a sheet
of polypropylene that I cut to shape, scratched the surrounding plastic and
covered the whole area with 2 layers of fiberglass and epoxy. I made the epoxy
quite sticky (not too much hardener). It took a long time to dry but it is
flexible enough to match the polypropylene and I haven't had any leak with
it since (6 years ago).
So don't worry and go for it, it's still indestructible!
