there are other possible costs associated with a rescue, as in my
story. my mast broke out in mid-bay at crissy. it was early, so i
simply resolved myself to a long swim. i'm pretty comfortable with
the swim by now.
it actually didn't take as long as i thought to swim nearly all the
way back and almost to bozo beach when the big coast guard boat pulled
up. i told them i'd swim it in, since i was so close. also, i wasn't
looking forward to climbing into this bigger boat of theirs. however,
they convinced me that i wouldn't make the beach and would end up at
the next marina.
anyway... fine, i figured why refuse their offer of help. i got into
the boat then was told to sit. i sat idly by as they nearly destroyed
my gear! they finally ended up pulling up my rig from the clew by
dragging my 4 mo old fiberspar carbon boom and scraping off chunks of
padding! after meticulous care, the perfect padding i had on my boom
was gone in seconds. WHY?!
moral: don't break gear, else, rescue yourself, else, don't get in the
bigger damn coast guard boat, else, ask for the rubber dingy?
