I am not a die hard surfer but have done it a few times and have friends
that are addicted. This is my 2 cents:

Long board for $250 bucks- good luck!>
long boards are expensive to buy new. Many surfers start with short
boards and then later save up to afford a long board to fill in the days.
These boards last a long time and many just save them for ever and rarely
upgrade. I have found it difficult to find a used cheap long board. So I
got a wide fun short board- like a fish. It's manageable in bigger surf-
like at Ocean Beach, but also forgiving to get up on. I just wish I had
more time to enjoy.

This is only my limited experience, just wanted to add it to your knowledge

Have fun,

e
