San Carlos has the same seasons we do, and February is still the storm
season. I went there with Solo the last week of March one year and we had a
lot of rain and south wind, same as here except maybe 10 degrees warmer. It
was cold--think west coast California summer fog and winter rain. And it is
a long car trip from San Diego unless you have a small plane that can land
on the dirt strip and the strip is open.

Lake Arenal would be your bet if you're stopping on your way to Brazil. I
stayed at the Mystica and at the Rock River Lodge and rented gear on the
opposite side of the lake from Tilawa. You sail straight across and jibe in
front of the Tilawa concession. February is in their dry season, which
means is rains intermitantly almost every day instead of steadily every
single day. (I kid you not. I asked a local in Spanish if it really was
the dry season and he said yes because it was sunny at the ocean beaches.)
If you like sailing Oyster Point and you like mud, you'll like Lake Arenal.
I personally vastly prefer a 5.5 on Sea of Cortez swell than a 4.0 on lake
chop. To get there, you fly over night, all night from LA to San Jose and
then take a lovely three or four hour drive up to the lake.
