Berkeley has nice onshore winds, smoothest wind range in entire bay, at
least according to Call of the Wind reports (and my impressions). Join Cal
Sailing Club for $40/quarter, use their gear, use their "instructors". Or
just rent gear next door at Cal Adventures (they don't even care if you can
sail, they charge $10/rescue!). Or if you have to stay West Bay, Flying
Tigers is rustic and windy (and gusty) when nowhere else is (use the SFO
reports), has flat water and you can touch the bottom almost all the way
across (especially at low tide - you'll touch bottom about 2 feet deep for
200 yards before getting wet). Coyote has a nice beach. There is usually
rental gear at Candlestick (white truck), but VERY up/down offshore wind.
Berkeley wins!
