yes, the swell came......Saturday was a good day, w/solid 4.7 conditions
(205#). The waves were about waist to shoulder high, w/occasionally bigger
sets. It was quite crowded on the lower reef. I camped out just in case
Sunday was going to be windy as well, not to mention the word was out that
a new swell was about to arrive. Didn't want to drive all the way to
Oakland and then back again on Sunday. Camped in my truck. Woke up, no
wind, lots of sun. bike ride time.

Went for a great mtn. bike ride in Calwell Ranch (sp?), some great trails
w/very cool and challenging single tracks. It sure helps to work out the
kinks of sailing to do an aerobic activity. After a lunch at the truck,
noticed the white caps in the ocean. At Davenport by 2. The waves were
looking really nice. Decided to go out on 5.4 (my psft logo sail) as most
of the folks on the water/going out were on 5.0/5.2: I always go a bit
bigger due to my size. The reach out was waaayyyy too fast: don't want
that much power on the face of waves. One fun ride and back to the beach
for the 4.7. Perfect for the next 2 hours. Big waves, smaller crowds.
The wind was builing all afternoon. On one of my jumps on the way out,
broke my boom (chinook alum. 2.5 years old). Not a good thing to do w/the
landlord somwhere in that cold water - it sure is cold when you are
floating around. Did the old: disconnect rig from board, remove uphaul,
remove boom, flip boom, reattach boom to rig, attach rig to board. Sloged
my cold and tired ass into the beach past the big ass rock formation.

I was determined to end my awesome sailing weekend on an up note. Went to
truck grabbed extra boom. Sailed back out. The wind was going off at this
point: I could hardly manage that 4.7 zeta waaayyy downhauled. Most guys
were on 4.0/4.3: gals were on 3.0-3.2. The waves were getting sloppy from
all the wind swell: like the rinse cycle of a very cold washer. I could
barely hang on to the 4.7 when making bottom turns. Some sweet rides were
to be had.

Amazing how the drive home is always so beautiful and easy after a great
session.

It was a great weekend of wave sailing.

Good Saturday evening Zeev Gur:

Sundays dawn patrol will hold a nice surprise with a new W-NW swell. This
is surprising for this time of year. You would expect a swell like this in
mid
winter, not early summer. Look for solid head high surf at the NW facing
beaches
for Sunday with continued solid surf through Tuesday. This system while
not wide,
does stretch a long way into the Pacific, so we can expect an extended
period of
surf.

The expected period is about 14 seconds, with an initial direction of 280
-290
degrees. An excellent direction for most of northern California, and
southern
California for that matter.

Most all the south swell activity we had over the last week or so is gone,
so
all eyes should be looking to the north.

Look for decreasing swell for the second half of the week, with surf
heights
expected to drop rapidly Thursday to Saturday.
