Friday, 17th, I sailed 1/2 Moon Bay. The winds were blowing hard and a 15'
swell @ 20 seconds told me that Davenport would be closed out and only maybe
Scott's would be doable, but only for the saintly. Even my imagination
wasn't ready for that at least not this early in the season.

I launched just before the parking lot on the jetty. There was one other guy
out and we had a pretty good time. This place is flukey, but can be fun.
Because the winds are side-off with some obstructions, I rigged 5.8 (190#) /
8'6. This was just right to get out through the inside lulls. The outside
was rippin. On BIG Surf days the swells start jacking up way outside on some
outer shoal /reefs. The surf was almost breaking, but big & steep enough to h
ave some fun. I caught a bunch of waves to the inside, but they are only
good for one bottom turn and pop, and then you have to nurse your way back
out.
Anyway, this can be a place that is a good alternative on these rare
occasions and sometimes have some rideable surf.

Thursday, Davenport... 'D' Day #1
Plenty Powered on a 4.7,/ head - logo surf then building to mast high sets
towards the end of the day on the South reef. I only sailed an hour, but it
felt like a full day. Nothing broken, no big swims, caught some good long
waves,,,
Nice way to start the season.

Sunday, D day #2
Friggin WINDY, Flat Out on a 4.2 (190#). I sailed the North reef which had
pretty nice waves coming through even though the wind was so strong it was
pushing down the wind waves with more chop. It was kind of like mashed
potatoes with lumps, but when the sets came in it was gravy down the line.
Outside the jibes were wide eyed and WILD. The inside got kind of holey and
spooky at times.

Monday, Waddell #1
I stayed the night on Sunday with my wife at Castanoa, the new luxury camping
lodge just south of Pigeon Point. It was windy all night and morning. I had
a two hour window in the morning so I sailed Waddell @ 11:30. I was the
first one out and a handful of guys joined in the fun later. The water was
dark and brownish, definitely wintery looking. 4.7 and pretty steady with a
little holey luck on the inside to get out safely. The sets seemed to be
building when I quit to a challenging size while the wind seemed to be
getting weirder. This was one board meeting I attended that I was glad to be
early.
Last year, Waddell set up really well as far as the shape of the waves. Its
too early to tell this year; the jury is still out as well as the sand.

Each of my sessions this year have been short but intense. I guess thats
spring for ya.
PS If anyone wants to know more about Castanoa let me know. Its a great
natural romantic place to go, relax, hike, bike, and sail.
