My understanding of the standard way of dealing with a rip is to swim
parallel to shore to get across the rip, then swim toward shore (the waves
should help). Swimming straight toward shore in a rip tide is the cause of
many drownings as people exhaust themselves.

If the waves are so big that you are not comfortable swimming in them, it is
probably a good day to watch.
