Kauai has sailing in two spots :
One on the south shore of the island just east of Poipu beach. You
take a dirt road going east accross a sugar cane field, which then
turns towards the shore. Locals sail there and they are no beginners.
The waves are a couple hundred yards out. The day I was there, there
were about 20 people sailing 4.5s and a couple of guys taking
photographs from the top of the dunes.
One on the north shore west of Haena Bay at the site of the YMCA
camp. looks like kanaha, but very few sailors with 5.0 sails that
day. The wind is lighter than in Maui, more in the 5.0 range than in
the 4.0. I was there in June last year.

Then there is Anini beach on the north shore, for beginners, flat
lagoon sailing (6.0 range). There is a fabulous campground right in
front of the lagoon and two rental companies (beaten up pick-up
trucks with trailers) come everyday for lessons. They do rent
advanced gear for the whole day, but they're laid back, so it may
take you a day notice to get the gear. And it's at Maui prices for
older equipment.

Haena bay is the nicest surfing spot I have ever seen.
