You do a lot with your sail to steer the board, even the smallest board on a
plane.
You go to weather on a plane on a little board by dropping the mast back and
dropping the lee rail down. Ride the fin and the lee back rail of the
board.
The mast postion makes a big difference, too, whether you decide to place it
fore or aft in the track. If it's too far forward you are too sheeted out
and you pull the sail over yourself and you can't drop it all back and to
leeward as described above (given that you're in the straps and you have one
set).
You have three feet on the board, your two and the mast foot. When you go
to put your feet in the straps 1)you change your sail (sheeting in and mast
forward means more pressure on the mast foot and nose down-round down-jibe
initiation; sheet out mast back means tail down-round up-tack
initiation-land your jump tail first) 2)you press or lift on the booms, and
3)you use wave action any 3 or all 3 at once to allow you to lift one foot
off the board and minimize the disturbance.
Spinning out over chop? Jam the sail forward and sheet in.
