The perplexing realities of this crazy sport (windsurfing) rang true this
weekend. There was not enough wind for the first two days to hold any
events and it looked as though the last day, Saturday, was going to prove to
be a total skunk out. Alas, the wind god answered the pleas at the last
possible moment yesterday to allow for the contest to flow. The reports were
good, but no wind, but I decided to mosey on down there anyway to check it
out. Rounding the bend past Anno Nuevo the sky was blue and white caps
speckled the blue gliimpse through the trees. I quickly looked at the pager
and Yahoo it was reading 14-28.

Let the games begin! The wind came up fast and held long enough to run all
the heats. The heats happened fast and were only 10 minutes each. A South
swell was coming in about every 5-10 minutes so a big hunk of luck was
involved in wave selection. Judging was on the two best jumps and the three
best waves. The pros were awesome. I watched most of the pro heats and then
sailed adjacent to the contest. Its great to sail amongst such fantastic
company. Your skills get pumped up and you just charge the waves.

Jonah lepok (Santa Cruz) did really well and went to the finals, but didn't
win. Sean Aiken got 1st and was ripping. He is one of the best wave sailors
in the world right now and its a great experience just to watch him. He's
had a great year; I think his standings are:
3rd in Maui, 1st in Owahu, 4th in Jalama, 1st @ Waddell.
Angulo, Pascal Hardy, Kai Katch. , Cullen, and Fabrice from BC were
outstanding performers.

Waddell is actually a terrific place to view a contest. The cliffs are a
natural gallery and the action is close at hand. The parking lot was so
packed that another car couldn't possibly have fit in it. There was a real
good turn out and the place was packed with high anticipation. Fortunately,
like a giant big tease the wind and waves came through and didn't
embarrassingly skunk us. Waddell saved face and ruled!!!
