There will be a joint meeting of the Berkeley Waterfront and Planning
Commissions this Wednesday evening, May 19, 7:00 PM at the North Berkeley
Senior Center, 1901 Hearst (at MLK about a block north of U. Ave).

Last week the Berkeley City Council instructed the Commissions and City
planning staff to drop consideration of a hotel, or other significant
commercial development, from the Marina Plan options.

This was a surprise move coming just before the end of this phase of the
planning process, and it significantly reduces the possibiity that the
launch site just west of His Lordships will see any real improvement.

One of the concepts that had been proposed was a small hotel with a
"windsurfer resort" theme, and part of the deal would have been tidal
steps, outside showers, dedicated parking, and other amenities to serve
the local sailboard community that like to launch at that spot.

The Council's resolution also puts the whole Marina Plan in a bit of a
bind, with one less way to generate the revenue that keeps public-serving
facilities and programs operational.

As always there will be a public comment period at the beginning of the
meeting, and people with relevant comments will, in all probability, be
able to speak later in the meeting as well. Please attend if you would
like to affect the outcome of this planning process.

for more detailed comments on the Berkeley waterfront issues.
