I was woken up at 3 am by a wild gust that
shook our bedroom windows. The trees outside
were going nuts in the wind. I had a hard time falling
back asleep...anticipating the fun filled day on the
water.

I got to Alameda at 1pm and saw two guys on the water
on 4.5/5.0 size gear. They were planing pretty good.
The tide was VERY low - you had to walk out almost to
the wooden structure before it got deep enough - a pretty
long walk, good thing it was not mud, just sand.

I went out on 5.4/8'8" enduro (210#), was nicely powered
most of the time. As with storm sailing, you have times
when you are way op'd and times when you are doing the
slogging hula. Wild weather. The sky went from black
to grey to almost blue. The water was all shades of brown
and grey and everything in between. When the sun peeked
out for 2 minutes, a Maui like rainbow was seen over the
east bay hills. A lot of life was all around: all types of birds,
a bunch of jumping fish that I have never seen before in
the bay and even one curious/lost? sea lion who kept
following me for 15 minutes.

All in all this was not quite as windy as last Monday's storm
but still plenty of fun to be had. The solitude and beauty of
winter sailing is pretty hard to match. Even harder to describe
if you have never done it.

"Well there ain't nothing wrong with the way she moves,
Oh scarlet begonias or a touch of the blues,
and there's nothing wrong with the look that's in her eyes..."
