EAST BAY NEWS - Berkeley Marina Update

IMPORTANT!! BERKELEY MARINA WINDSURF ACCESS MEETING MARCH 28 10AM

Please plan on attending a public workshop being held this Saturday,
March
28 at the South Berkeley Senior Center at 2939 Ellis St. Berkeley. The
meeting runs from 10am - 1pm. This is a very special opportunity to
voice
our needs for adequate windsurf rigging, parking, and launch access at
the
Berkeley south basin. Windsurfers should plan to arrive about 15-20
minutes
early to agree on the options we would like to promote. Please call Don

Fukushima (925) 253-1256 dfuku@ix.netcom.com-DeleteThis or Jim McGrath (510)

** Background **
Last fall the Berkeley Marina posted additional signs prohibiting
parking
along the east and west sides of the dry storage compound located in the

south basin parking area. Their reason: easier boat access to the
compound.

The effect to the windsurfing community is reduced parking and rigging
areas. This recent move along with earlier parking losses along the
grass
on the east side, further reduces convenient parking and rigging for
windsurfers. Several regular windsurfers have approached Marina and
Waterfront Management to discuss the situation and they appear open to
suggestions which enhance parking and
windsurf rigging areas.

Two proposals currently being discussed are being pursued concurrently.
The
first creates a new rigging area about 14' wide, running the length of
the
south side of the dry storage compound. The area
would be protected by a low barrier made of old railroad ties or
telephone
poles. The remaining area still provides parking for two rows of cars
along
the entire parking lot.

The second option reconfigures a portion and possibly the entire dry
storage
compound for windsurf use. There are plans to move all boats to an
enlarged
dry storage area on the north side of the
marina. The goal is to have one of these proposals implemented before
summer; either one provides much improved conditions for rigging and
parking.

To maximize our effectiveness, it is important that all windsurf sailors
be
considerate of Marina Management and work together to provide a common
voice
as these negotiations progress. A petition is being prepared to
communicate
the desire to provide increased rigging area and more convenient
parking.

the
dry storage fence and the bulletin board near the grassy rigging area.
