Hope you don't mind me jumping in here but I thought you
might like an opinion from someone who's been in your spot.

I transitioned from the same obrian 10'6" to an Alpha 9'9"
4 years ago. I learned to waterstart on it and it was perfect
for that phase of learning. I'm about 175lbs and I had no
problem uphauling it when I needed to.

IMHO, for 20 bucks you can't go wrong. If it's like mine, the
Alpha is plastic "rotomold" that is just about indestructable.
It weighs more but not that much and I still sail it, 6.0 - 7.5,
on medium to light days. It planes easily and will carve a jibe
as you progress to that. It's the board I really learned to use
the harness and straps with. You could spend more on a lighter
board but, hey, save your $ for good sails/masts/booms. At your
stage I think this is your best bet.

Hope this is usefull.

hi rick,

what kind of board is that alpha? i've got a big monster 10'6" o'brien
excellerator longboard, and i was looking to start learning on something
a bit smaller. how stable is it for waterstarts (i'm still working on mine;
the chop gets me every time). also, for what conditions is that 4.6/mast
combo appropriate? i'm 170# and usually sail near the shore (in the cove,
not much out into the channel) at 3rd and coyote.

thanks,
