Friday

started work early, finished early, went sailin'

Alone again... no sign of wind until I was comming down the hill to the
beach, but there they was: whitecaps! swell looked pretty dinky. rigged
5.3/8'8, launched at 3:48, in the waves 30 minutes later, wind building.
I found a few waves, was pushing my envelope, went "by the lee" to try to
get on a wave *behind* the one I was on...caught my clew in the water at
high speed...flip flop slam bam I think I heard a snap...but my boom was
OK. Mast looked kinda funny, but I felt the kinky part and figured out
that the two pieces weren't properly mated...then I found it: hole in
sail, flapping loudly. go to beach. stay calm. think.

I cut out the flapping vinyl (stainless steel knife in my fanny pack),
making a triangular window right in the heart of the Nalu. Rerigged to
make the mast right. I rolled up the incised plastic and shoved it down
the luff sleeve - wouldn't want to litter my favorite beach! Went sailing.

The nice Nalu stability was kinda shot, but visibility was incredible!
Power was just about right, as I had turned the 5.3 into about a 5.0.
Sailed another 1/2 hour, the waves crapped out at the top of the tide,
the seals came out for dinner, and I pointed it downwind. Was rinsing in
the duck pond by 6.
