last thursday I saw one in the channel at 3rd. It was premiere for me
there... It was a california seal, not a sea lion... i was surprised
to see one that far down the bay... it speaks for the quality of the
     water in the bay...

now i guess it would be possible to find a great white down there too.

I've been seeing these guys for years at Crissy, but there
seems to be more than usual this season. I sailed past them
several times on Fri, Sat and Sunday last. They can dive fast
but in my experience they often don't see or hear you until you
are pretty close, perhaps they can't hear well when their head
is out of the water. Usually I will 'bark' at them as I
approach and will get a startled reaction followed by a quick
dive.

I believe I may have hit one that was submerged last year at
mid-span under the bridge. I was ripping along at full speed
and wham, suddenly I'm over the handlebars for no apparent
reason, the board came to an immediate stop. I could not find
any debris in the area and there was not a scratch or mark on
the fin. It definitely hit something soft.
