This sounds cool. However Mike Godsey's report seems to contradict a
previous note which stated that some windsurfers had been told
windsurfing was not allowed on the island??? What's the skinny?

Tom Slattery <TSlattery@macromedia.com-DeleteThis> asks:

> I did see three Windsurfers powered up between Alcatraz and Treasure
> Island. Is it possible to launch from T Island?

Mike Godsey responds:

Not only is it is possible to launch from Treasure Island it is an easy
launch for advanced and expert sailors and offers awesome sailing and
spectacular views. Not only does it have some of the highest summer winds in
the Bay it also has very large swell. Best of all it starts blowing hours
before other sailing sites and often blows when Crissy is dead. In the
autumn Treasure Island keeps on blowing when all the other sites have died.
There is high wind right at the launch site so no slogging to the windline.

The best place to launch is at the boat ramp near the NE corner of the
island. The wind is offshore so just sit on your board until the wind blows
you far enough from shore that you have a clean shot at Angel Island. Then
blast off on a broad reach. There are currently no restrictions on launching
from the island. High ranking officers have talked to us about how great it
is to see people sailing from the island.

Depending on the tidal current the swell can range from chaotic to smooth
with the most rugged conditions being near Blunt Point on Angel Island. The
wind never dies unexpectedly here in thermal conditions. But since you have a
small target to return to it is a good idea to return occassionally to the
launch area for a reality check. Getting back to the boat ramp is easy
although you might have to swim a short distance. Do not consider sailing
here in a flood unless you can point upwind in all sailing conditions.

The consequences of a breakdown are significant so use your best gear and
bring a emergency kit. If you break down on a flood head to Berkeley... on a
ebb Crissy is your best bet. You are in shipping channel and outbound ships
make a hard turn to port into this area so keep an eye down toward the Bay
Bridge.

The Blunt Point report on the wx radio is not reliable for judging the wind
at the launch since the wind often wraps around the Point on its way to Rio
and does not get to T. Island. Sometimes there is a Treasure Island report
on the wx radio but it is extremely inaccurate. Jeff, a Treasure Island
"regular", looks down on the T Island sailing area from his office. If
conditions are good at the island he adds a Treasure Island report to his
Windsight Crissy fog and wind report around 2:00 pm. Check for his report
on Windsight option 53. Kenny Hart runs a platform boat out to Blunt Point
in the autumn for late season high wind junkies to sail from Angel to
Treasure.
