Subject: Re: Crissy Sunday

OK... I am going to describe what my friends and I called "The Secret
Spot"...

WHEN : it works when the wind is southwesterly (= wind shadow in Crissy)
and/or when it's very hot in the Bay or inland without fog.
These statements are based only on 3 months experience...

WHERE : if you come from south 101, exit at Alexander Ave and turn to the
first left and then to the first right to the Golden Gate Recreational Area.
The proceed to the left, cross some military buildings and head to
a parking area close to the rocky dock. If you come from 101 north
exit at the last Sausalito exit, after the tunnel.

LAUNCH : you have to launch from the rocks of the dock. I do it carrying
the board+rig together and without booties, so it's not that difficult.
To come back is more difficult, I separate the board and the rig, I
put the board on the rocks and climb them carrying the rig, then I take
the board. But usually people help each other there....

HOW MANY PEOPLE : max. 10

PRO : nuclear and steady wind : you can sail with a 4.0-4.5 when
the people are using 5.5-6.0 in Crissy !! Yesterday it was so funny
to see the people coming from Crissy with huge sails and huge boards...
The current is very strong. If it's ebbing you can have big chops
and almost "real" waves (1-2 meter high) in a well visible zone.
If it's flooding, thanks to the strong wind you can always sail
without problems.

CONS : the launch. Plus, it's very easy to UNDERESTIMATE the wind
(I have been often very overpowered...), and to go back and change
sail means to climb the rocks once more time...

HAZARDS : don't sail alone NEVER, because there are really a few
sailors there, but this is a general rule valid everywhere.
I did not see any other big hazards, except for strong currents
which can bring you to Angel Island or the Ocean if the wind drops.

About the wind : it generally picks up really nuclear after 4-5 pm.

So, now you are all invited to THE SECRET SPOT !

See you there next time ...

I have a Fanatic Skate white with some blue and red designs and North
Sail wave sails, plus an old light brown Nissan Maxima station wagon.
And you can recognize me by the inevitable strong italian accent...
